Feeling Grateful for our "Farmily"

Posted by Julia Smith on

It is finally starting to feel like spring is in the air. There is still a foot or two of snow on the ground but it is melting fast and I'm starting to feel hopeful and looking forward to the change of season. The Stellar Jays are nesting in the big ponderosa pine next to the feed silo just outside my office window. The trees have started pollenating and I've gone through a whole box of tissues since yesterday. We've had our first litter of piglets for the year (on Facebook Live! Check it out if you missed it) with another due next week. Calving has started and the local wild horses look like they will start dropping their foals any minute.  Soon the whole ranch will be covered in beautiful Saskatoon berry blossoms and the air will be filled with the hum of bumble bees and other native pollinators.

It has been a hell of a winter. Our first here in the Nicola Valley, and boy did it throw everything it had at us. But with adversity, comes growth and opportunities. This winter also came with a tremendous outpouring of support and encouragement from the "farmily," a word I use to encompass everyone who plays a role in what we are trying to do here at Blue Sky Ranch. From our dedicated, tireless staff who know that that a paycheque is not the true measure of one's worth, to our customers who honour us with a place at their family table and are our biggest cheerleaders, you are all a critical part of team and we couldn't do any of this without you.

With the change of seasons upon us, I'm looking forward to spending time with as many of you as possible and continuing to learn and grow together. We look forward to seeing folks up at the ranch this summer and you'll find me at farmers markets on the weekend and at the shop every other Friday.  Social media technology like Facebook Live are making it easier than ever to bring what we do right to the palm of your hand so look for more live streaming from the ranch too.

So thank you for sticking with us and believing in us. Thank you for taking the time to write with feedback, praise and encouragement. Thank you for sharing us with your friends and family (which is such a compliment!) and for trusting us with something as important as your food.

With gratitude,

Julia
