Volunteer Opportunities with Growing Chefs

Posted by Ryan Shannon on

Because I’m a sucker for punishment I took on a second position recently with Growing Chefs!  and I am currently recruiting volunteers to join us in the classroom for the program this spring. We still need about 50 volunteers to help us reach our goal of reaching over 1200 students across BC this year to get them growing and cooking healthy food in the classroom. And who better to teach kids about eating good food than our farmily!
Growing Chefs!
We are a local charity that teaches kids gardening and cooking skills by placing chef and community volunteers into elementary school classrooms. We believe in the importance of connecting young children to their food through hands-on learning, connecting them to nature and teaching them how their food choices impact their personal health and the health of the environment. Sign up to volunteer with us!

Volunteering Outline
This year, the first Growing Chefs! classes will begin the week of March 29th or April 4th.  From then on, you will visit your classroom every second week until the end of June, for a total of seven visits.  The volunteering time commitment totals only 4 hours a month (not including the initial orientation session).  Find out more about what it is like to volunteer.

How It Works
- Volunteer chefs, farmers, gardeners and community members are put into teams of three or four.
- You will attend a Volunteer Orientation Session, where you learn basic classroom management skills and review the Growing Chefs! curriculum.
- You and your team are paired with an elementary school classroom.
- You visit your class every two weeks over the course of three and a half months, for a total of seven visits.
- As you mentor the students and help them to grow their own indoor vegetable gardens, you lead the class through a series of lessons.
- The lessons are clearly laid out and outlined in the Growing Chefs! Classroom Guide that you receive at your Orientation Session.

Please register to volunteer before Feb 17th, the number of volunteers dictates the number of classrooms we are able to bring the program to so please register as soon as possible.

For more information on our program, feel free to visit our website. If you know anyone who might be interested in the program this year, please share our volunteering video and the attached poster and even post it at your place of work! Most of our volunteers come to us on a referral basis, so if you aren't able to participate this year, please pass it on to someone who can. If you have any further questions about who we are or what we do, please do not hesitate to contact me anytime,
